Karen Ferris is a 21-year-old member of the elite High Guard Academy cadet group Red Squadron, Red Squad for
Charlotte Arnold as Karen Ferris.
short in 2374. She was assigned to the SS Valiant on a training mission prior to the outbreak of the Dominion of Evil. When the attack began, the Valiant was trapped behind enemy lines and severely damaged in a demonica class freighters attack that killed all of the officers. Ferris was given a field promotion to commander and a position as first officer by acting captain Tim Walters. She and Walters are former classmates from High Guard Academy and joined the Red Squad, just after Lt. Lillian Crusher graduated.

Eight months later, the Valiant attempted to destroy a massive Demonican battlecruiser that were designed to destroy the primary support braces of the antimatter storage system of the battleship. Farris was successful in hitting the target, but the weapons were ineffective. She is the daughter of Captain Tyler Ferris of the SS Drake. She meet Lillian Crusher on board the Valiant when Crusher was assigned as the newest chief medical officer. She was best friends with Lillian Crusher and Stacie Collins. She was good friends with Kestra, Riley Shepard, and the Stewart twins.
Battle against the Vedrans[]
When Ferris was a sophomore at High Guard Academy, her mother, Claudia was killed in a ambush by the Vedrans. She was on board a carrier ship, SS Majestic, when it was attacked by three Vedran freighters. Ferris took the news hard, her father swore to avenge his wife's death. Ferris, her shipmates, and the SS Victory went on a search to find her father, Captain Tyler Ferris and his ship, SS Drake, before he engages an attack on the Vedrans. Lt. Lillian Crusher's father, Capt. Crusher orders the Valiant not to intervene in a battle between the Victory and the Drake. Against Capt. Crusher's orders, Ferris pleas to him and Capt. Walters to let her talk sense to her father. They both agreed to let her beam on board the Drake to talk to her father. Ferris tells her father that the war is over and he must stop what he was doing. When the two talk about her mother, Ferris breaks down in tears and tells him that she does think about her mother and tells her father that she and her mother wouldn't want him to continue to fight against the Vedrans. Captain Ferris and his daughter both cry over the death of Ferris's mother. Captain Ferris overturns command of the Drake to his first officer and beams aboard the Victory where he is to remain in the Detention center until the Victory returns to Sydney, Australia. While Ferris returns to the Valiant and deals with her father's punishment, she tells Captain Crusher that she still loves him and was proud to have him in her life.
